Black Lives Matter at UU Church of Tippecanoe County
The UU Church of Tippecanoe County (UUCTC) hosted an Open House on April 4, 2016 that was open to the community. There was live music and poetry at the event. Community groups also set up tables of information about how people could get involved and help Black Lives. Groups that participated included the NAACP, Purdue's Black Cultural Center, the League of Women Voters (registered voters during the event), Indy10, and many others. The event received advance publicity from the local newspaper and local television station. The event was very well attended by a diverse cross-section of the community, including the local chief of police. The banner was hung at this event. Prior to the Open House, the Board of Trustees and the Program Council gave permission for the banner to be hung. A Black Lives Matter Task Force was then assembled. This Task Force organized many educational activities prior to the Open House, including discussions, lectures, and a movie showing of Cracking the Codes. The Minister has also been weaving Black Lives Matter into many of his sermons. The Task Force is continuing to plan activities, including a book group discussion, more lectures, and more movies so the congregation and community can continue to be informed and involved. The 2016 theme for "change for change" (all change put in the offertory basket) is Escalating Inequalities: Black Lives Matter and all groups that receive donations will be doing something to improve black lives.
