Submit Meditations

For a new inSpirit anthology edited by Rev. Bill Sinkford

Skinner House Books, the imprint of the Unitarian Universalist Association, invites members of UU congregations to submit original poems, prayers, or short prose pieces for possible inclusion in the next volume of the inSpirit series (previously called Meditation Manuals) to be published in May 2017. This will be an anthology of pieces by many Unitarian Universalist authors.

The Theme

It would be trite to lament the divisiveness of our times, if the dangers of divisiveness were not so great. It is so easy to stay at the level of sound bites, so easy to dismiss those with whom we disagree as misguided, self-serving or simply absurd. Yet the issues of Climate Change, Black Lives Matter, and Income Inequality certainly require something more than partisan sound bites will ever solve.

The divisiveness also seems to be deepening. It seems like a we have a long pull ahead to operate as communities of resistance. Can we also operate as communities of hope? As the editor of the next volume in the inSpirit series from Skinner House Books, I’m looking for poems, prose reflections, and prayers that will help us hold both our hopes and our fears as a progressive religious community. Traditional religions suggest some categories: Wisdom. Lamentation. Prophecy and Comfort. Contemplation. Mystical Vision. Engagement and letting go of attachment. Ecstatic Joy. I think we will need readings that speak in all those voices, and more, to help us move forward with integrity and love.
