In His Own Words

by Caleb Leman

I want to serve this faith because I believe that the elusive goals of happiness and truth are much easier obtained with the support of trust and love through human connection.

Our Unitarian Universalist (UU) faith offers a unique community that makes profound impacts on how people think and act. Growing up, I went through many different Religious Education curricula and with each class learned more about what I believe. For example, an ongoing discussion in my youth group is on the subjectivity of morality, which continues to push me to keep an open mind and seek to understand why I believe what I believe. The open mindedness and unconditional love that I gained from growing up in a UU community has been foundational to my personal morality and by serving Unitarian Universalism I will support people on their own journeys toward truth and happiness.

Great UU communities must be fostered and maintained under our principles to be effective and healthy. One UU community that has a lot of potential is the young UU leaders across the world. By bringing opportunities to these leaders and building a supportive community, we can empower them to make effective progress in making the world a better place.

For example, Luminary Leaders program of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) has shown me the effect of empowerment through providing opportunities. One such example was my chance to interview Jim Key, the Moderator of the Board of Trustees, and Peter Morales, the President of the UUA, in which I learned so much about what the UUA is about and the passion they have towards this faith. Luminary Leaders is a UUA youth group that operates out of a simple Facebook group where great opportunities are presented for youth to make an important impact while supporting their values. When I joined Luminary Leaders I was given the opportunities to pursue my passion for my faith and take on leadership responsibilities.

As Youth Observer to the UUA Board of Trustees, I hope to create a larger community where youth from all around the world will be supported and support each other in chasing after their passions, magnifying their positive impact. By connecting the larger UU community we can truly help change the world.
