Unitarian Universalist Association Strongly Opposes Stupak Amendment

The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) strongly opposes the Stupak Amendment, which would effectively deny coverage of abortion, a legal medical procedure, for millions of women receiving coverage through the proposed health care exchange. We join the Stop Stupak Coalition in demanding that Congress strip the Stupak Amendment from the final health reform bill.

According to Rev. Meg Riley, UUA Director of Advocacy and Witness, “The Stupak Amendment would violate the very spirit of health care reform by leaving millions of women worse off than they are today. A government committed to human rights and democracy should not enshrine one religious voice or doctrine by making it the law of the land.”

We believe strongly that all people have the right to comprehensive, high quality health care and that women should be able to make reproductive health decisions based on their own values. Meaningful health care reform must provide access to high quality, affordable health care for all people, regardless of race, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation or socioeconomic status.

Unitarian Universalists have a historic commitment to working for women’s rights and reproductive health. Our faith affirms the inherent worth and dignity of every person, the right of individual conscience in decision-making, and respect for human life.

The Unitarian Universalist Association is a faith community of more than 1,000 self-governing congregations that bring to the world a vision of religious freedom, tolerance and social justice.
