Interim Director of Religious Education for Children & Youth (DRE)

July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019; possible renewal for an additional year.

Pay and benefits are based on education and experience.

First Unitarian Portland has a lively and dynamic community of 500 children and youth.  The congregation is transitioning from a long-time and beloved DRE, looking toward a lifespan model of spiritual deepening.  We are seeking a skilled interim DRE who can help us serve the current community and envision our future.

General Position Summary: The DRE is part of a leadership team that works to carry out the mission of the Church, and helps prepare our young people to live lives of integrity and purpose.

The interim DRE will envision, direct, coordinate and evaluate the religious exploration program for children – infants through 12th grade in a year-round ministry, which includes a Summer program.  The primary responsibility is coordinating, planning, supervising, and supporting the Sunday morning religious education program.  Other duties include children’s and intergenerational worship, family-life education, pastoral care to children and families, and social activities and social action projects.  The interim DRE will also help evaluate the religious exploration program to identify what is working, what is challenging, and how we might transition to a lifespan model.

Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities:

  • With other leaders, develop and implement a vision and mission for the community.
  • Advance the tenets of Unitarian Universalist faith and tradition.
  • Administer and oversee the religious exploration and spiritual deepening of children and youth, which includes recruiting, training, and support staff and volunteers, and locating and maintaining curricula, educational materials and supplies to support children and families.
  • Evaluate the current program with an eye toward lifespan faith formation.
  • Coordinate with other church leaders to involve children and families in the life of the church, and plan intergenerational worship.
  • Provide spiritual support and religious education resources to families.
  • Prepare and monitor the budget for the children’s religious education program.
  • Communicate about religious education to the congregation through Church publications, bulletin boards, brochures, reports, etc.
  • Provide leadership for the Religious Education Committee.

Secondary Functions:

  • Willing to and adept at performing related clerical functions, such as filing, photocopying, and maintaining records, ordering and purchasing supplies, etc.
  • Willing to perform room set-up and clean-up when necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

The DRE supervises the RE staff, which includes the Associate Director of Family Ministries, Religious Education Assistant, child care providers.  The DRE also supervises many volunteers.

Interpersonal Contacts:

On a regular basis, the DRE works closely with ministers, RE and other staff members, volunteers, the congregation, parents, children, youth, and the RE Committee. A successful candidate must communicate clearly and directly with others verbally and in writing, and exhibit a positive, constructive, and collaborative attitude.

  • Ability to help integrate children and families into the life of the congregation, making connections through social action, worship, workshops, classes and fellowship.
  • Able to sincerely and appropriately show love and respect for children and families.

Education and experience:

  • Requires a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in religious education or education, Master’s degree preferred, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Requires knowledge of and demonstrated commitment to Unitarian Universalist Principles and Purposes.
  • Requires knowledge of religious education philosophy and UU curricula.
  • Requires knowledge of moral, cognitive, and social development of children, and demonstrated experience in utilizing that knowledge.
  • Requires understanding of and demonstrated experience providing for the worship needs of children.
  • Requires knowledge of and demonstrated experience providing appropriate learning environments and classroom management.

Job Conditions: The DRE for Children works in a professional office setting during the week. Sundays require moving throughout the large, urban campus. Evening and weekend hours are sometimes required. This job is multifaceted, stressful and often requires work under time pressure.  The church office and sanctuary are not easily accessible for those who use mobility assistance.
