MDD Chalice Lighter Call
The MDD 2017-18 Fall Chalice Lighter call supports two congregations seeking to enhance RE programming who will share this award. Contributions are being accepted through October 23.
Two Rivers UU in Carbondale, CO is seeking to expand RE from one to three classes and establish a "children's chapel." To accomplish these goals the congregation wants to double the RE director's time to enable her to train volunteers to become Sunday School teachers as well as to organize volunteers and to select curricula. Two Rivers hopes that by expanding their RE they will enable overall growth. They perceive they can grow well beyond their current membership of 60 adults. The grant request is for a total of $7,000 to enable doubling the time for the RE director and to provide for additional training and materials.
Columbine UU Church of Littleton, CO is seeking to hire a "Youth Services Coordinator" at the cost of $3,500 for a year. Columbine is currently at 92 adult members and with a single service on Sunday currently the sanctuary feels "cramped." By adding a second service with a specific youth orientation, crowding would be alleviated and there will be an opportunity to attract more youth to the church. The proposal is for the youth coordinator to work 10 hours per week for 30 Sundays over the course of a year. The total cost of the project is $4,500 with the congregation providing $1,000.

Chalice Lighters: Help PCD UUs get to Regional Assembly
The fall PCD Chalice Lighter call is designed to bring more PCD Unitarian Universalists to the Regional Assembly in Portland, Oregon, April 27-29, 2018.
It is our goal to make Regional Assembly accessible to all congregations in the PCD. The Board voted unanimously to make a minimum of $500 available to each congregation within our District to send representatives to Regional Assembly. We want to eliminate financial ability as a factor in who gets to participate. Soon, each congregation will get information from the Board on how to access this resource.
All the funds raised in this Chalice Lighter call will be used for sending UUs from the PCD to Regional Assembly. Please support access to Regional Assembly with your gift today.
Can you afford to give $20? We are grateful for whatever you can contribute. Payments will be accepted towards this call through November 20. Ten percent of each call reimburses expenses to administer the program. Dear PCD members,
Since there were no grant proposals from congregations, the PCD board has decided to ask for your donations to help more people get to the Second Pacific Western Regional Assembly that will be in Portland, Oregon next April. I hope you will donate to that call.
I hope that you will think about how your congregation might apply for a Chalice Lighter grant in the next cycle, Spring 2018. You can find the application on our website. Take a look at the application and then let me know if you have a good idea and we can discuss it.
At the same page you can also find a link to sign up to be a Chalice Lighter donor if you aren't already. If you are, thank you! The more Chalice Lighters there are, the more money can be raised toward your project.
To help this process along, each congregation should ideally have a Chalice Lighter Ambassador. I am happy to give you materials to help promote the program. Let's see if we can at least double the numbers of Chalice Lighters in the PCD. By doubling the numbers of donors, we can double the amount of funds raised for your projects.

Class Conversations Workshop in Berkeley

The instructors will include Rev. Dorothy Emerson, one of the founders of Class Conversations. The workshop will help UUs become more aware of economic and social class distinctions and how they impact society as a whole, play out in our congregations, and affect the quality of our social justice work.

PUUF receives official Welcoming Congregation status - The Pagosa Springs Sun
This month, the Pagosa Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (PUUF) reached a milestone in its history, receiving official approval as a “Welcoming Congregation” through the national Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA). The congregation applied for this designation following 18 months of proactive education, community outreach and self-reflection regarding issues confronting the LGBTQ community.

President Donald Trump’s executive order making immigration laws more strict has undocumented immigrants all over the country taking refuge, including Elmer Peña and his family, who have found sanctuary at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in Colorado Springs. “There is a story about a family that wants to be together,” Peña said. “I feel welcome in this place.”

Nunes’ office door remained locked during most of the demonstration, with only a few people allowed in. The group was told Nunes was out of the country and may not be available to meet with constituents until next year. That’s too long to wait for the Rev. Tim Kutzmark of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Fresno, who was among around 20 members of Faith in the Valley at Nunes’ office Tuesday. “In a very short amount of time, decisions are going to be made on the (federal) budget,” Kutzmark said, “and the current budget is going to harm the most vulnerable.”
