UUA President Applauds Marriage Popular Vote

BOSTON—In response to the results of yesterday's marriage equality ballot initiatives, Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) President the Rev. Peter Morales has released the following statement:

“The decisive victories for marriage equality in Maine and Maryland are cause for rejoicing. For the first time in U.S. history, voters affirmed the freedom to marry by popular vote. And while we optimistically await the results of a similar ballot measure in Washington, these victories, along with the defeat of the discriminatory anti-marriage amendment in Minnesota, clearly indicate that more and more Americans realize that the freedom to marry strengthens families, protects children, and ensures the basic rights of citizenship for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender couples.

Unitarian Universalists played significant roles in support of marriage equality in each of these states. I want to extend my deepest thanks to them for their unstinting efforts and to congratulate them on these victories. Their commitment to standing on the side of love was a compelling witness for our Unitarian Universalist values.

Today, we celebrate these historic steps toward full equality for all Americans. Tomorrow, we continue our important work in the fight for marriage equality. On behalf of our Unitarian Universalist Association, I reaffirm our commitment to stand on the side of love until the freedom to marry is the right of every American.”
