A Statement from UUA President Peter Morales on the Passing of C. Conrad Wright

Word of the passing of C. Conrad Wright reached me yesterday in India, and I am saddened at this loss. While I did not know Conrad personally, his myriad contributions to our Unitarian Universalist movement are well known.
Beyond any argument, Conrad was the preeminent scholar of Unitarianism of his era. As Professor of American Church History (later Emeritus) at Harvard Divinity School, Conrad shaped the intellectual development of several generations of our ministers. And as the author or editor of such influential books as The Beginnings of Unitarianism in America, The Unitarian Controversy, A Stream of Light, and Congregational Polity: A Historical Survey of Unitarian and Universalist Practice, he shed light on the foundations of our faith tradition. I am thankful for the legacy he created through his outstanding body of published work.
Conrad was more than just a scholar and professor. For decades, he was also a respected member and leader of First Parish Cambridge (MA) where he lived out the traditions he so astutely described in his scholarship. I know that church community feels his loss profoundly.
On behalf of the entire Unitarian Universalist Association, I send my most heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. His outstanding achievements have earned the lasting respect of his peers and the gratitude of Unitarian Universalist scholars everywhere. In our time of sorrow, may we take comfort in knowing that Conrad found his true calling – and that his work stands as a testament to a life well lived.
