The marquee that normally contains the sermon topic was immediately changed to read BlackLivesMatter the week of George Floyd's death to show solidarity with the movement and community. We started an art installation called "The heART Project" where members are asked to; take a large stone, which is symbolic of the weight of racism that people of color carry and cannot put down, choose a name from the growing list of black lives lost to paint on that stone, learn about that person, and create a covenant with the black community to work to dismantle systemic racism and white supremacy culture. The finished stones are displayed at the front of the church property together as a memorial and promise to not forget their names or the anti-racism work that must be done. Shortly after the June annual meeting the former co-lead of Social Justice donated a Black Lives Matter banner to our congregation and it was hung on the exterior wall of the Sanctuary facing a busy street.
