Every congregation has experienced destructive behavior that has caused upset, tumult, and conflict, from microaggressions to outright aggression, and other forms of inappropriate behavior. In the process, covenant is broken, even when the covenant might not be explicitly stated. The impact of the behavior can baffle leaders, and congregations often don’t know how to repair, restore or renew their community. It is therefore important that every congregation recognize that the holy space between each of us is everyone's responsibility to grow and maintain and when it's broken between any people it's broken between us all. We need to have policies and procedures in place to deal with destructive behavior.

In this workshop, we will talk about:

  • Theological and ethical underpinning of covenant
  • The upside and down sides of covenant
  • Appropriate accountability in congregations – where and how to set the boundaries
  • How to create and design both a covenant of right relationship and policies and procedures for dealing with destructive behavior
  • Special situations involving staff, youth, and limited access agreements
  • And answer your questions.

You are encouraged to come as a team from your congregation, and you’ll have an opportunity to learn from other congregations as well.

Workshop will run for approximately 6 hours—we will be taking ample breaks, including a longer break for a meal/snack. The workshop is open to all UUA congregations. Presenters include Congregational Life staff; Summer Albayati, Tyler Coles, Patricia Infante, Lisa Presley, and Annie Scott.

The cost is on a sliding scale per person, where you choose the appropriate amount for you based on your financial situation: $20, $30, $40, $50. If you’re coming in a team of three or more from your congregation, then we recommend you each pay the lowest amount.
