UU Society of Iowa City experiences transformative Service/Learning work in Guatemala

The Iowa City Press-Citizen has a great article about a recent service/learning trip that 27 youth and adults from UUSIC took to Guatemala. Experiences like this reflect a widely shared commitment among Unitarian Universalists that UUA President Peter Morales has identified as essential priorities for our faith: "Getting Religion, Crossing Borders, and Growing Leaders:"
Describing the trip, Lois Cole, director of religious education at the UU Society... emphasized the benefits of young Americans traveling to and doing service in developing countries to broaden their perspectives. "Cultural barriers are crossed in such an immersion experience. I think we had the realization that there was a shared humanity there, that we all had common desires. Also, our youth have so many opportunities in Iowa, and I think after visiting Guatemala, they became more appreciative about what they have."
