United Nations Day at UUCA
Date: Passed: Saturday, October 20, 2018, 8:00 pm EDT
Sunday, October 21 was UN Day at UUCA. Our subject was “When Crises Strikes: Climate Change and Refugees.” Ambassador Donald T. Bliss of Cedar Lane UU Church was our speaker. He was formerly President of the United Nations Association of the DC area and has a long history of action and advocacy for the world body. Noah Priddy, 12-years old, with impressive spirit and fine voice, helped Marietta Tanner tell her “story for all ages” about a boy whose beach house was destroyed by Hurricane Florence and how he and his friends now empathized with the people whose homes are being swept away by climate change caused rising seas and who take to the sea in rickety ships to find a home in foreign lands. Two guests from the Sudan who were refugees from strife caused by desertification of their homeland were introduced and spoke in after-church sessions about their travail. The congregation shared the collection plate with UUUNO and the Sunday School parents and children took UNICEF boxes for collection of coins during Halloween.
