By My Side: Utilizing Doulas in Vulnerable Communities
Doulas are professional birth coaches who provide women emotional, informational, physical, and mental support during all stages of birth. Their work is important in communities all over the world, and it is vital in those that lack access to adequate health resources. The panel will focus on the role of doulas within vulnerable communities, such as migrants and those in poverty. Panelists will discuss the challenges these communities face receiving adequate mental and physical health care during all stages of childbirth, as well as the international community's responsibility to create policies and practices that ensure the safety of new mothers.
This event will include a short film and a discussion about how doulas help fulfill the objectives of the Beijing Declaration by delivering quality health care to women throughout their pregnancies.
This event was originally scheduled for March 17 as an official Parallel Event of the NGO CSW64 Forum of the United Nations 2020 Commission on the Status of Women in New York City March 9-20, 2020. Since CSW64 was cancelled due to COVID-19, the event is shifted online!
