Attending General Assembly as a Delegate

Being a delegate at General Assembly can be overwhelming even for those who've done it before. But unlike years past, when everything was done in 4 days, delegates now have 4 weeks to do it.

Here's a simple guide to help you navigate the work of delegates at this year's General Assembly.

Note that as we approach deadlines and events, we'll send reminders and much more detailed information. This email is intended to give you an overview of the entire process without getting into the weeds.

Vote in the Election

Learn more about this year's candidates. There is a contested election for the Nominating Committee.

  • Attend the Candidates' Forum on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at 5:30 p.m. ET / 4:30 p.m. CT / 3:30 p.m. MT / 2:30 p.m. PT.
  • Attend the Presidential Forum on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at 2 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. CT/ 12 p.m. MT / 11am PT
  • Attend the Presidential Forum during General Session III
  • Vote!!!

Review, Discuss, Amend, and Vote on the Business Resolution

Delegates are considering the Business Resolution: Complete Divestment from the Fossil Fuel Industry and Subsequent Reparations

A simple overview of the process is:

  • Review and discuss the business resolution on the discussion site.
  • Submit amendments by June 1, 5 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. CT / 3 p.m. MT / 2 p.m. PT.
  • Attend the Mini-Assembly on June 10 to discuss submitted amendments.
  • Vote on the amendments discussed during the Mini-Assembly.
  • Attend General Session III to discuss unincorporated amendments.
  • Vote on the unincorporated amendments discussed during GS III.
  • Attend General Session IV to discuss the business resolution as amended.
  • Vote on the business resolution as amended.

Review, Discuss, Amend, and Vote on the Proposed Revision to Article II

Delegates are also considering Proposed Revisions to Article II (PDF).

The process for revising Article II differs slightly from the process used for the business resolution due to how our bylaws handle these revisions.

  • Review and discuss the proposed revisions to Article II on the discussion site.
  • Submit amendments for priority consideration by June 5, 11:59 p.m. PT.
  • All amendments must be submitted by June 22, 9:30 am PT.
  • Attend the Mini-Assembly on June 22 to discuss submitted amendments.
  • Attend General Session II to discuss unincorporated amendments.
  • Vote on the unincorporated amendments discussed during GS II.
  • Attend General Session III to discuss additional unincorporated amendments.
  • Vote on the unincorporated amendments discussed during GS III.
  • Attend General Session IV to discuss the proposed revisions to Article 2 as amended.
  • Vote to continue the work of revising Article 2.

Propose and Consider Actions of Immediate Witness

An Action of Immediate Witness (AIW) is a statement about a significant action, event, or develo p.m.ent in the world that necessitates immediate engagement and action among UU member congregations and groups.

  • AIW submission period May 31–June 6
  • Discussion and poll (if necessary) period June 7–14
  • Attend General Session II to hear from the AIW proposers
  • Vote to admit 3 AIWs to the agenda
  • Attend General Session IV to discuss the admitted AIWs
  • Vote to affirm AIWs

Propose and Consider Budget Motions

A Budget Motion is a request to consider a change in the amount of money in an area of the UUA operating budget.

  • Attend the online Budget Hearing on Friday, June 23, at 12:30 p.m. ET / 11:30 am CT / 10:30 am MT / 9:30 am PT.
  • Submit a budget motion by 5:30 p.m. ET / 4:30 p.m. CT / 3:30 p.m. MT / 2:30 p.m. PT on Friday, June 23
  • Attend General Session IV to discuss budget motions (if any).
  • Vote on any budget motions.

Propose and Consider Responsive Resolutions

Responsive resolutions are brief, advisory statements that express the sentiment of the delegates. They must be in response to a substantive portion of a report by an officer or committee reporting to a General Assembly.

  • Submit a responsive resolution by 5:30 p.m. ET / 4:30 p.m. CT / 3:30 p.m. MT / 2:30 p.m. PT on Friday, June 23
  • Attend General Session IV to discuss responsive resolutions (if any).
  • Vote on any responsive resolutions
