0:05 Hi, my name is Beth Casebolt 0:07 and I am with the central East region on the congregational life staff. And I am here to talk you through the process of getting onto a zoom call for the first time. Zoom is a piece of software we often for the UUA for meetings, 0:20 worship services, gatherings of all types. You can join it by phone only if you don't have a computer or you're unable to get online, or you can join by computer or you can use a smartphone or a tablet. 0:34 There is a piece of software you need to put on your computers or your phone or your tablet in order to participate. The software is available both for iOS and Android and it's available for Mac or Windows, you should go to zoom.us 0:50 and download the software ahead of time so that you have it installed already on your computer. It only takes a couple minutes, but it would make the process much easier. So let's see how do you get onto the zoom call now that you have the software. So what's going to happen is you've gotten an email for your event on zoom. It has the date, it has a link. It has a meeting ID number, and then several phone numbers. The fastest and easiest way to get into a zoom meeting is to just click the link, which will open your browser and it will give you this download and run zoom. 1:29 Or it will give you this little 1:32 launch application. 1:34 Because I have zoom on my computer, it's giving me that option and I can just open the link and it will open up zoom automatically on my computer. If you haven't yet downloaded it, you'll have to download it at that point. The second option is to just open the zoom and click Join meeting. And then you see this meeting ID number. Just type that in there. Sometimes you might just have Given the number, so you won't have a link, you type in your name if you don't have it yet. And you can tell it to turn off your video or not connect audio. So you can tell that up front. And then you click join. He mine is set to ask about videos. So I'm going to join with video. 2:17 And then it's going to ask me if I want to join 2:19 with or without the computer audio. Here's the choice between computer audio or phone. If you are in an area where your internet is not particularly strong, and you're worried about the internet dropping during the event, you probably want to call in so you don't lose the audio connection while you're trying to get back in on the computer. If you are in a situation where you also use, for example, hearing aids that connect through your phone through Bluetooth or you need to have something right up against your ear, then that might be another reason to call in. Otherwise, you're going to want to choose computer audio. But if you click phone call is It will tell you the numbers in the meeting number. So you can just sit here and dial in right away. Under computer audio, you just click Add computer audio. And it says I'm using the computer audio. And we're all set. So here, once you get in to the system, here's what the screen looks like. If you are on a tablet or a phone, if you tap or in the case of a computer, if you run your mouse across the screen, it'll pop up all of these controls. Over here on the left, you'll see a mute a microphone. If you click on that, it'll put a red line through it which will mute you there's a little up arrow that will let you select what microphone and speakers you want to use in case they didn't use the right ones. The next one is the the camera. If you put a line to that it makes your camera go away and your name just shows up. And the little up arrow lets you pick which camera you want to use. You can chat is the chat you can send a message Message to whoever. 4:03 So I can say Hi, I'm here. 4:07 You can also when there's a group here, you can choose individuals to chat to. There's a couple of quick features I want to show you that you may end up doing when participating in a zoom call. The first is breakout rooms. So when the person says they're going to do breakout rooms, you'll get a message that shows up that looks like this there and host their hostess invited me to breakout room one and I can click the join breakout room, sometimes some do automatically. And it's going to take a minute to put me into the room. And now I'm in a breakout room. You'll see it told me that I can also ask for help. And I can invite the host to the breakout room for assistance so I can send a message to the host to come help me. And then I can also leave the breakout room and return and I can either leave the meeting from this point or return to the main session. So we're going to go back to the main session. When the host closes all the breakout rooms, it will give you a one minute countdown, and then you'll have, you'll automatically be brought back. So do know that that happens. Another thing that can happen when you're in an event on zoom is you can be participating in a poll. So this is a poll that I'm being asked to participate in, it popped up. It's a poll participants. Have you used them before? I'm going to click Yes. And then I'm going to click Submit. And then they will end the poll. You can also be asked, they can sometimes share the results and they'll show me what the results look like. Here's a different kind of poll is is a multi answer poll. So you can click off the different things you've used and click Submit. And then the host can share the results. They don't always share the results. Sometimes it's just for them, but that allows you if this is in the way and you want to get rid of it, just click close and it'll go away. If the host is recording the event, if you look in the upper left corner, you'll notice the red dot and the According. So that tells you that this is a recording going on. So you are aware of that. And the last thing I want to show you is over here on the right, the speaker View button, if you click speaker view, it will put the host in the center, or if they're whoever is actively speaking, if it's not you. So if you're participating in a webinar, that's probably the best way you're going to want to do it. If you're participating in something like small group ministries, you may want to see everyone in which case where it says gallery view here, you want gallery view and that shows different boxes, the boxes can have as many as 20 on a page about it, the exact number you can have up will depend on the size of your screen. And though there's too many, there'll be a little arrow that shows up on the right hand side to go to the next page. You can also do a few things from within the window of your picture. If you notice I tapped on these three little dots. 6:55 I can stop my video, mute my audio, pin that video to the side Rename myself or hide myself from view so I can like not see myself if that's distracting pinning the video just puts my video or whatever video I pinned and then you can also unclick that. So if I wanted to pin for example, if there's a particular person I want to see and other people are making noise, I want to do that. One other tip I want to give you is it's really recommended if at all possible to use a headset when using the software and allows any extraneous noises in the in the room or you know, people walking by or your heating system kicking on from interfering. If you're unable to do that, and we understand that sometimes that's just not possible, especially if you're showing this in a room of multiple people. You need to make sure you keep yourself muted except when you're speaking. It can also cause a feedback loop between your speakers and your microphone. So that's another reason to keep it muted whenever possible or use a headset And that's how you use zoom to participate in a meeting. Transcribed by https://otter.ai
