Does Getting Started require using demo content?

Hello -- I am trying to recreate and improve my church's site, currently based in Joomla. I found the early stages of the step-by-step outline very well done and clear. Kudos! I have now reached a point however where the tutorial seems to assume I am playing with the sample content from the demo. I instead used a plugin called FG Joomla to Wordpress to import much of the content of the current site. I have now reached a point where the step-by-step tutorials have diverged from my process. For example: >Adding menus to the site takes two steps: first you create the menu, then you assign it to a menu area.
Utility Navigation
>The utility navigation is the menu at top-right. To enable the search and directions menu item, you need to add a “Custom-Link” with custom-css.
There is no Utility Navigation, or any navigation, in the one Home page I have created.
Where should I be when I 'add a “Custom-Link” with custom-css?'
--Is this something I can do within the Wordpress administration tools?
--Or should I have look for a CSS file somewhere and edit it in my usual text editor? Am I being too ambitious in trying to use content from my current site? Should I instead import all the content from the demo site, and gradually replace it with my own content? Thanks,
Jim
