Breathe: A Letter to My Sons by Imani Perry

The Racial Concerns Committee of the Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship at Stony Brook (UUFSB) invites you to join our Annual African-American Read-In, which is part of the National African American Read-In which occurs each February as part of Black History Month. Our 2021 Read-In will be held online in our virtual sanctuary. We will be highlighting this year’s UU Common Read book Breathe: A Letter to My Sons by Imani Perry. All are welcome to come join in our Zoom meeting, including children. Come for some of the time or come for all of the time!! Spread the word to others you know.

You can bring your own reading by any African American author or select a passage from Breathe. Plan to read for 3-5 minutes. Picture books are encouraged for children. Sign up for a time slot in advance (sign-up link below) or just drop in. If you sign up, please tell us your planned reading in the comment field of the sign-up sheet. If you don’t bring your own reading selection, you might be able to join in one of the shared readings of passages from Breathe with the text displayed on screen.

Breathe is available for purchase at uuabookstore.org and other online bookstores. There are also 22 copies of it in the Suffolk County library system. If your local library does not have it, you should be able to ask your library to get a copy via inter-library loan request.

Sign up for a time slot to read (but “walk-ins” are very welcome). Join the Read-In on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 13, 1:00-4:00 p.m. For more info, please contact John Morris (jtmlife@gmail.com).
