7th Annual Poetry Workshop and Poetry Slam
Type of event: Public Event
All Poets are invited to participate in an upcoming Poetry Workshop and Poetry Slam at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Sterling, VA on February 16. 2019. The Poetry Workshop will be held by our emcee Regie Cabico at 3-5 pm in our Sanctuary. Afterward, The Poetry Slam will be from 7-9 pm and the students will perform a 3-5 minute poem accompanied by the George Mason Jazz Trio. It is highly recommended that those who want to participate in the slam should also attend the workshop. We are hoping this will be an enriching experience for the student and adult poets who attend both the workshop and the Poetry Slam. There will be gifts cards of $100.00, $50.00 and $25.00 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place respectively. This community arts poetry workshop and Poetry slam is paid through a community arts grant by the Virginia Commission on the Arts and the support of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Sterling, VA. Any young person 15 and under attends for Free.
HIGH WATTAGE: ELEMENTS OF THE SLAM POEM workshop.
In these spoken word performance workshops, participants will use “imagery” to create a poems that incorporate pop culture & autobiography to celebrate "who we are” by exploring our dreams and our most fanciful urges. We will combine outrageous lies into hyperbole and use sense memory and experimental word play to invigorate our language. We will look at the poem as one explosive haiku and use the things that “bring us joy” & our "pet peeves" to propel us into performance. We will unlock the basic elements of poetry slam performance: vocal, physical gesture & eye contact—demystifying the page from the stage. This is a chance for jazz poetry slam participants to rehearse their poems and generate material.
