For several years now, on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, charitable organizations have come together to sponsor "Giving Tuesday". As an addition to the traditional Black Friday and Cyber Monday events, Giving Tuesday kicks off the holiday season, when charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world come together in common purpose: to celebrate their cause and to give.
The UUA participates in Giving Tuesday each year, and this year is no exception. Last week in an email to donors about this event, Rev. Lauren Smith, Director of Stewardship and Development, wrote:
This is what we build together when we give to advance our faith—a church that sustains and renews, heals and holds, a monument to love and justice that will shelter generations to come, a house of memory and hope.
This Giving Tuesday, I hope you will join me in supporting our Association and its vital mission. Your giving will bless people you know and many you will never meet, in ways you cannot imagine.
Thanks to the generosity of the UU Veatch Program at Shelter Rock, your gift will be matched and doubled, up to a total of $25,000.
Thank you, today and always, for the ways you give and serve.
Other UU organizations – such as the UU Service Committee and UU College of Social Justice – are participating in Giving Tuesday, and maybe your congregation is too! Every Giving Tuesday donation helps our congregations bring people together and allows our UUA to reach out and take a stand for justice, love, and peace.
2020 has been a challenging year for everyone. Some of us who have been very generous in the past are now finding ourselves in the position of being unable to support our favorite causes in the way we would like. Others of us are finding that we have much to be thankful for and can be more generous than in the past. Many charities are finding higher demand for their support and services and are in greater need for donations at this time. Please give as much as you can at this time for your circumstances.
