Spirituality and Service: How Did I Get Here? (Part 2)

By Erik Mohn

This is the second installment in the continuing series of personal reflection by Erik Mohn, the Spirituality and Service Consultant at the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministries of the Unitarian Universalist Association - Ed. So, where was I on November 1, 2011? Well, professionally, I was starting my job at the Unitarian Universalist Association, as the Young Adult Spirituality and Service Consultant. But, personally, I was on a mission. I graduated from Howard University in May, 2011, and instead of finding work in Washington, DC or in New York City, I decided to move back home to Harvard, MA; a seemingly outlandish decision for someone who spent his childhood trying to escape the small town lifestyle. However, I felt it was the right choice at that time. I didn't want to trap myself in an entry level job where I’d be seen as a worker and not as a human, and I wanted time to think, reflect, and ground myself before truly heading out into the world. I have always believed that before attaining any kind of material success I need to be rooted in my values and clear about who I am. In the same vein, the most successful people in the world know who they are. They stay true to themselves, they follow their hearts, and they work hard to realize their vision. I want to be one of those individuals, so I felt it was necessary to take some time to work on myself, instead of joining the rat race, like so many others. Where this decision would take me? I had no idea…
