A New Year on The Blue Boat

By Carey McDonald

As we begin the New Year, I thought I'd post an (obligatory) update on our work here in Boston at the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministries. We've got a lot of great projects in the pipeline that you should know about! Yes, it may be a cliche to write the "time to pause and take stock" article at this season, but it's cliche for a reason, right? Here's a few select tidbits of our work towards promoting youth and young adult empowerment and multigenerational ministry:
  • Youth Leadership Recognition Program - Affirming our existing youth leaders, promoting capacity in youth leaders, and connecting youth leaders with opportunities in the faith as a whole are the goals for a new national youth leadership recognition program currently being developed. We have done a series of well-received focus groups with a diverse set of youth, and plan to roll out the program in the coming months so that applications will be available this summer.
  • Find a Campus Ministry - Modeled after the Find a Congregation function on the UUA's website, we are working with our IT department to compile campus ministry contacts from across the country and pair those contacts with information on the college or university where they are located. Should make it easy to find a chapter that suits your needs (location, college type, etc.), or else you should start one!
  • Young Adult Fundraising Guide - Geared towards young adults planning service trips under our Spirituality and Service program, this guide will be finalized in the next few weeks.
  • Anti-Racism Curricula for Youth and Young Adults - Collaborating with other staff groups in the UUA (Resource Development and Multicultural Growth and Witness) we are working on an introductory program for youth on anti-racism , and on supporting the revision of the Building the World We Dream About for a young adult scale.
More info on all these items to come, just wanted to whet your appetite. Hope you all have a lovely and productive 2012! And as always, don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or there is any way we can be helpful.
