30 Days of Love: 6/30

By Kayla Parker

Today the 30 Days of Love honors the work of the farmworker movement. In honor of their legacy and solidarity with it's current iteration, we'd like to let you know about an opportunity to do your alternative spring break with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers. The invitation below comes from Rev. Allison Farnum of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Ft. Myers, FL. -Kayla As the 30 Days of Love invite us to think of social justice in our own backyards, what about the social justice aspects of ethical eating on your very own plate? Did you know that 90% of the tomatoes consumed during the wintertime in the US are from Florida? Unitarian Universalist congregations and groups have been working with the Coalition of Immokalee workers on their Campaign for Fair Food since they organized in the late 90's. But you and your participation are a part of the future of fair food in Florida fields and beyond. The CIW has reached unprecedented agreements with 11 multi-national corporations, and this is just the beginning! Join up with other Unitarian Universalist youth, young adults, adults, clergy, religious educators, youth advisors, and social justice leaders for a unique alternative spring break in SW Florida. Come and take part in a learning/service/action/reflection immersion experience in the heart of the “Fair Food Movement” with leaders from the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, Interfaith Action of SW Florida, and the UU Church of Ft. Myers. This event is sponsored by the MidAmerica Region of the UUA, but is open to all! Join with other UU’s as we learn, reflect, serve, and create a “Standing on the Side of Love,” fair food action to bring awareness to the noble efforts of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers. We will be learning about the Campaign for Fair Food, and will be taking a public stance in an action to pressure the corporate food industry, with companies such as Kroger’s, Publix, and Giant, to come to the bargaining table with CIW. We will be immersed in learning, action, service, and reflection to honor CIW’s pledge: CONSCIOUSNESS + COMMITMENT = CHANGE WWW.CIW-ONLINE.ORG Registration info here. SAVE THE DATES: MARCH 20-23, 2013 Registration deadline is MARCH 17. Camping is available in UUCFM eco-preserve. Also, thanks to a grant from our national Youth/Young Adult office we now have matching scholarships ($60. scholarship, with the recipient having to only pay $60.) for up to 15 people.
