Young Adult Spiritual Activists Sought

Union Theological Seminary (Union) in New York, New York was founded in 1836 on the vision of centering theological education and ministerial training in an urban context so that academic excellence and personal faith might respond to the needs of the city. In the furtherance of this mission, Union convenes the Millennial Leaders Pilot Conference, July 13–17, 2014.

The Millennial Leaders Project is a Union pilot initiative assembling 25–30 young adult leaders to explore the intersection of activism and spirituality around projects and topics suggested by attendees in their application to the conference.

Formal affiliation with a specific religious tradition or community is not a prerequisite and people with no formal religious affiliation are encouraged to apply. The only formal requirement for consideration is an interest in the intersection between spirituality and activism.

The objective of the conference is to allow young adult leaders to examine the relationship between spiritual traditions and social activism. Moreover, within the context of theological education, this conference encourages young leaders to engage in theological reflection alongside of grappling with more practical concerns (i.e. activist and spiritual practices) as they endeavor to most effectively address these issues.

Eligible participants are leaders between the ages of 21-35 who have a demonstrated record of sustained social justice activism in their respective communities. These leaders may hold any sort of leadership position ranging from formal positions–such as with a religious community or non-profit organization–to less official roles that still demonstrate progressive leadership.
