Advocacy and Action in Virginia 2017
Action Date(s): December 4, 2016 - 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm EST
Learn about the social justice issues that our Virginia legislators will consider in 2017, how these issues impact our greater community, and concrete ways in which we can impact legislation under consideration. The speakers will be Lavona Grow, past executive director of UUSJ, Anna Rhee, advocacy consultant for UUSJ, and Rebecca Bowers-Lanier of B2L Consulting. Together these professionals will discuss the art of the possible regarding the upcoming Virginia legislative session: what bills we think will be proposed that impact social justice issues we care about, information on “how to advocate,” and what actions we can take to influence legislative outcomes. This forum is free and open to the public.
The speakers presented their views of the current political climate on the federal level and in Virginia
· They emphasized the need for those with concerns about climate change, immigration and economic justice, healthcare and other social justice issues that may be brought before state and federal legislators in 2017 to be active and vigilant
· The speakers gave tips on effective advocacy and effective citizen lobbying
o Handwritten letters in one’s own words and phone calls by citizens to their state and federal legislators voicing their concerns on a particular issue are effective and make a difference
Especially important when meeting with legislators and staff members:
o It is important to research both sides of an issue from reputable sources
o Share personal stories related to the issue with lawmakers and their staff members
· If people have concerns about issues, they should communicate and schedule meetings with lawmakers throughout the year, with decision-makers who share your views and also those who do not
