Straight Talk with Real Muslims: A Panel
On Sunday, June 12, the Community Church of Chapel Hill, NC hosted a panel discussion on the subject of what it's like to be Muslim in America, in the present context of rampant Islamophobic rhetoric and hate incidents. The event, which drew more than 150 attendees, brought together Muslim writers, journalists, and scholars from around the Chapel Hill community to discuss the overlapping crises of Islamophobia, religious bigotry, the refugee crisis, and racism in America as they impact the daily lives of Muslim Americans. Among the speakers was Dr. Mohammed Abu-Salha, whose two children were the victims of a fatal shooting that shocked the Chapel Hill community -- and the country -- in February 2015. Dr. Abu-Salha's words spoke powerfully to the awful toll that hatred daily exacts upon the innocent.
