Defying Hate: Interfaith Cinematic Event and Activity Night
Action Date(s): September 29, 2016 - 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm EDT
As we witness ideological divide and xenophobic, inflammatory rhetoric in the news, the need for collaborative work between groups from different faith traditions to heal ailing society is growing stronger every day. In conjunction with religious organizations across the globe, the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Charlotte County is opening its doors at 1532 Forrest Nelson Blvd. on September 29, 2016 at 6:30 pm to offer an Interfaith Cinematic Event and Activity Night to defy hate.
The featured documentary of the evening will be Defying the Nazis: The Sharps’ War. This inspirational and powerful tale of interfaith action in trying times will be shared in conjunction with activities from a companion curriculum called, We Who Defy Hate: An Interfaith Preparation for Social Justice Action, which was co-written by social justice educators Dr. Jenice L. View and Dr. Mark A. Hicks of the Fahs Collaborative at Meadville Lombard Theological School. Hicks notes “Today, we see lots of evidence of how difficult it is for faith communities to reach across cultural gaps. We have found that good intentions are not enough; faith communities need specific strategies in order to re-learn how to bridge those gaps.”
The Fellowship’s Board President stated, “Our goal is to bring the whole community out to this multigenerational interfaith event to watch a powerful and inspirational movie about regular people who, against terrifying odds, defied hate. Then we are going to work in small groups to think more deeply about how we work together as a multi-faith community to build a more loving and just world.”
