General Assembly 2012 Accountability Group

An essential element of our governance system is our annual gathering of congregations at General Assembly (GA). At GA 2010 delegates passed a resolution on convening a Justice GA 2012 in Phoenix. The resolution read that GA 2010:

“…recognizes that people with historically marginalized identities will be exposed to increased risk and inaccessibility, and therefore instructs the UUA Board to work in accountable relationship with Diverse Revolutionary Unitarian Universalist Multicultural Ministries (DRUUMM), Latina/o Unitarian Universalist Networking Association (LUUNA), EQUUAL ACCESS, Transgender Religious Professional Unitarian Universalists Together (TRUUST) and other stakeholders to identify measures that can be taken to increase safety and accessibility at the 2012 “Justice” GA;”

As the UUA Board gathered October 13-17, 2010, we began to formally lay the groundwork for achieving the intention of delegates for a Justice GA. The Board passed two motions: one is a statement of purpose for GA 2012:

The Unitarian Universalist Association will offer a General Assembly in 2012 which transforms individual and congregational capacity for effective public witness and influence on issues of justice. As we gather in nonviolent protest with a focus on public witness and social action, we are committed to:

  • Identify outcomes in collaboration with our internal and external partners
  • Provide opportunities for participation by individuals of differing abilities and people with historically marginalized identities (including youth and young adults)
  • As we celebrate the first 50 years of our Association at General Assembly 2011 in Charlotte, North Carolina, we will also lay the groundwork for Justice GA 2012 with strategic programming.

The second motion is aimed at putting in place an accountable process to lead us to Phoenix:

Pursuant to the General Assembly’s Business Resolution on GA 2012 in Phoenix, the Board of Trustees will appoint a GA 2012 Advisory Group including representatives of our internal accountability groups to advise the Board and GAPC on safety, accessibility, programming, and plenary business of Justice GA 2012.

In October the Board began conversations with our internal accountability groups to provide advice to the Board and the General Assembly Planning Committee on safety, accessibility, programming, and plenary business of GA 2012. The GA 2012 Accountability Group was appointed and met for the first time in January 2011.
