Abolition of the House Un-American Activities Committee and the Senate Internal Security Sub-Committee 1961 General Resolution

WHEREAS, the House Un-American Activities Committee and the Senate Internal Security Sub-Committee have failed to accomplish the purposes for which they were established; and

WHEREAS, over the years of their existence, the effect of these committees has too often been only to harass people who held unpopular opinions; and

WHEREAS, the cause of national security has been used by these committees as an excuse to call into question longstanding individual freedoms granted under the Constitution of the United States;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: That the Unitarian Universalist Association:

  1. Recommend to the Congress the abolition of these two committees; and
  2. Urge all Unitarians and Universalists to call upon their representatives in the Senate and House of Representatives to vote against further appropriations for these committees.
