WHEREAS, the Unitarian Universalist Association affirms the inherent worth
and dignity of every person; and
WHEREAS, the issues of poverty and unemployment are also of great concern to
WHEREAS, the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops' draft pastoral
letter states that, "Society has a moral obligation to take the necessary steps
to ensure that no one among us is hungry, homeless, unemployed, or otherwise
denied what is necessary to live with dignity"; and
WHEREAS, other religious and secular organizations have expressed similar
BE IT RESOLVED: That the 1985 General Assembly of the Unitarian Universalist
Association asks our governments to create programs to reduce poverty and
unemployment, provide job training, and aid hungry and homeless persons; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That moneys be taken from the military budget and
instead be allocated for the purpose of eliminating poverty and hunger in North
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That this Assembly endorses the principle that every
person has an inherent and moral right to work at a meaningful wage, food,
clothing and shelter.
