The Execution of Minors and Those Who Are Mentally Retarded

1989 General Resolution

WHEREAS President Schulz spoke in his report to the Assembly about the neglect of youth and the need for racial justice in our society;

WHEREAS the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association covenant to affirm and promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person;

WHEREAS Unitarian Universalists have in the past voiced their opposition to the death penalty; and

WHEREAS the United States Supreme Court on June 26, 1989 ruled that the execution of minors from 16 years of age as well as those persons who are determined to be mentally retarded is not a violation of the United States Constitution;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the 1989 General Assembly of the Unitarian Universalist Association express its opposition to this decision;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Unitarian Universalist Association urges Congress and state legislators to protect these classes of individuals.
