Medicaid and Women: What's at Stake
Medicaid, the state-federal health coverage program for low-income individuals, provides over 16 million women with basic health and long-term care coverage. This issue brief (PDF) from the Kaiser Family Foundation discusses Medicaid's role as
a critical safety-net program for the nation's low-income women, and describes the program's roles throughout women's lifespans. The brief highlights key
benefits of importance to women in their reproductive years, their middle years,
for women with disabilities, and for seniors.
In addition, this brief, sponsored by the Kaiser Family Foundation, Alan Guttmacher Institute and the National Women's Law Center, is the first in a series of events focused on Medicaid and women. Event panelists discuss how Medicaid works for women, including what Medicaid's role is in reproductive health; why states' initiatives are of importance to women and what women have at stake in federal and state efforts to restructure the program.
