This March, the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) invites you to recommit yourself and your congregation to building a peaceful world through participating in our campaign, “March to Peace." The month of March includes many unique opportunities to March to Peace, including the March 7 Interfaith Witness for Peace (where Rev. Sinkford will be speaking), the 5th Anniversary of the Iraq War, and the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee’s Justice Sunday. We are also in the midst of our four year denominational engagement in the Congregational Study Action Issue: Peacemaking. Please visit our sign-up page for more information.
Throughout the five years of America’s occupation of Iraq, the UUA has used its voice to promote accountability, international cooperation, and the placing of Iraq’s future back into the hands of its people. In 2003 the UUA General Assembly adopted an Action of Immediate Witness (AIW) calling upon Congress to conduct open bi-partisan hearings to examine the moral and legal justifications for the invasion of Iraq; in 2004 another AIW was passed calling upon the U.S. to transition from occupation to a complete restoration of Iraqi sovereignty; and in 2006 another AIW was passed endorsing the Declaration for Peace campaign and calling for a withdrawal of U.S. troops. The UUA has carried out these statements by advocated for an end to this war through the media and on Capital Hill. This war has had tragic consequences for the people of Iraq, America’s soldiers, and the future of international relations. The UUA is committed to the enormous amount of work it will take to not just end this war but to begin to heal the wounds that grow deeper every day.
