Public Policy & Legislation

Federal

There is no federal green building standard. However, federal agencies are required by law to observe certain environmental practices, such as energy and water efficiency; use of green building products; and waste recycling. For more information, see this page from the Office of the Federal Environmental Executive.

State

In April 2005, Gov. Christine Gregoire signed the high performance green buildings bill into law, making the state of Washington the first to require that new public buildings meet "green building" standards of energy efficiency, water conservation and other environmental standards.

In addition, the federal government, and many states and cities offer tax credits for purchasing green appliances and other products.
