Unitarian Universalist Policy
In 2006, the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) adopted a Statement of Conscience (SOC) regarding the Threat of Global Warming/Climate Change. While the UUA had passed many resolutions on the environment in its history, this was the first where we specifically addressed the issue of global warming/climate change. The passage of this Statement of Conscience encourages UUA staff and congregations to actively engage in this specific issue. The 1994 SOC, Environmental Justice, calls on Unitarian Universalists to view environmental issues through the lenses of economic and racial justice. The impact of global climate change disproportionately affects peoples of color and the poor. Therefore climate change is a social justice issue.
