Public Policy & Legislation

"Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Don't Pursue, Don't Harass," which implements Pub.L. 103-160 (10 U.S.C. § 654), is the official policy of the U.S. armed services with respect to Bisexual, Gay, Lesbian, and Transgender (BGLT) service members. Under the current policy, service members can be investigated and discharged if they:

  • make a statement that they are lesbian, gay or bisexual
  • engage in sexual contact with someone of the same sex
  • marry, or attempt to marry, someone of the same sex

The Military Readiness Enhancement Act has been reintroduced in the U.S. House of Representatives, which would repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and replace it with a statute banning discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
