Take Action
Visit our Action Page to email your members of Congress today!
Please contact your members of Congress and ask them to support and co-sponsor the 2009 Employment Non Discrimination Act (H.R. 3017/ S. 1584). Speak from your heart, but also consider what you most want to communicate. If you would like to tell your own story or if you have permission to share a story about someone in your community who has experienced workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, please do so! These stories are powerful and will help your Representative understand why ENDA is necessary.
Here are three more ways that you can contact Congress:
Call
Call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121. Ask for your Member of Congress by name.
Sample call script:
I am your constituent, and I am also a Unitarian Universalist. I am calling to ask the Senator/Representative to support and co-sponsor the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (H.R. 3017). This bill would guarantee basic protections against workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. I support fair employment practices for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Americans because I respect the inherent worth and dignity of all persons.
Thank You.
Visit
Members of Congress have local offices; visit your Senator's or Representative's website for information on how to set up an appointment.
Guide to In-District Lobby Visits
Visiting is the most effective way to influence Members of Congress. A few strong lobby visits to an undecided Representative can make the difference between passing or not passing legislation. Even visiting an "unfriendly" office is an important act of advocacy, giving the Representative one less excuse to vote against the bill.
Fax a Letter
Writing letters in your own words is another important way to influence members of Congress. Congressional offices receive only a handful of letters on most issues, which gives each letter real power. Identifying yourself as a person of faith makes your letters even more compelling! Making a follow-up phone call afterwards can help you build a relationship with your elected official and their staff.
Look up your member's fax number. Due to heightened postal security, faxing a letter is the only way to ensure that it will be received in a timely manner.
