Katrina Anniversary

The anniversary of Hurricane Katrina is a day to commemorate and honor the people and communities who suffered and perished, to celebrate those who have survived and rebuilt, and to push for justice. Hurricanes Katrina and Rita were devastating.  But the tragic loss of life and property sustained by the Gulf Coast in 2005 was as much a product of institutionalized racism, economic prejudice, and corporate greed as it was of natural forces. In the years that have passed since the disaster, racism and political corruption have continued to blight the Gulf Coast's recovery.

"Hurricane Katrina struck the New Orleans area early morning August 29, 2005. The storm surge breached the city's levees at multiple points, leaving 80 percent of the city submerged, tens of thousands of victims clinging to rooftops, and hundreds of thousands scattered to shelters around the country. Three weeks later, Hurricane Rita reflooded much of the area. The devastation to the Gulf Coast by these two hurricanes has been called the greatest disaster in our nation's history."
