Federal Income Tax Day

On April 15, all citizens of the United States are required to file their Federal Income Tax Forms. Recently, it has become a day during which anti-war activists rally to protest government spending on war and military endeavors. Some even go as far as to not pay their taxes.

Action

Write to your Congress members and inform them you wish for the military budget to be cut. By cutting government spending, domestic issues such as education, health care, and environmental protection can be fully funded. Or, you can promote the Peace Tax (H.R. 1921).

Unitarian Universalist Association Grounding

Unitarians and Universalists have long rejected paying taxes as a form of protest. Unitarian Paul Revere organized the Boston Tea Party as a form of protesting taxes excised on colonists for debts occurred during the French and Indian War. Henry David Thoreau protested slavery and the Mexican American War by not paying taxes, which ultimately led to his famous night in jail.

In 1972, our General Assembly passed a Business Resolution encouraging members and the UUA to stop paying the Telephone Tax, whose funds went to pay for the war in Vietnam.
