Tapestry of Faith Programs Update

Tapestry of Faith is the UUA’s new series of programs and resources for all ages that nurture Unitarian Universalist identity, spiritual growth, a transforming faith, and vital communities of justice and love.

All Tapestry of Faith curricula are published free online for all Unitarian Universalist congregations (and anyone in the world) to download and adapt for their own needs.

Some supplemental resources for Tapestry of Faith are published as print books, as is the new Our Whole Lives program for young adults.

Programs Now Online

Children

  • Living Faith (Grades K-1): Creating Home (16 sessions): Children are introduced to meditation, prayer, creative expression and other spiritual practices as they explore notions of homes and what they are for, through animal homes, their own family homes, and their faith home. By Jessica York and Christy Olson.
  • Living Faith (Grades 2-3): Moral Tales (16 sessions): Stories illuminate the meaning of fairness, compassion, and 14 other Unitarian Universalist values. Children learn how these values can direct us toward goodness and justice, using the moral compass we each carry inside. By Alice Anacheka-Nasemann and Elisa Pearmain.

Adult

  • Spirit of Life (9 workshops): An introduction to spirituality for Unitarian Universalists, by Barbara Hamilton-Holway.
  • Spirit in Practice (10 workshops): Ten paths to deep engagement in a UU faith community including meditation, prayer, creative expression, justice work, and other spiritual practices, by Erik Walker Wikstrom.

Children

  • Living Faith (Grades 4-5): Toolbox of Faith (16 sessions): Duct tape symbolizes flexibility; a hammer, power; a seashell, listening; Unpacking symbolic tools of our faith, children experience and develop their relationships with key qualities that shape a UU identity, faith and personal call to action. By Kate Erslev.

Youth

  • Our Families, Ourselves (12 workshops): A semester long programs for junior or senior high youth that explores the functions of families, by Tracey L. Hurd, based on an earlier program by Helen Bishop and Susan Grider. The program includes a photo-documentary project where youth interact with the congregation.
  • Exploring Our Spirituality Through Poetry (10 workshops): A program for senior high youth that uses poetry to explore our connections to our values and each other. Includes a poetry slam. By Karen Harris.

Adult

  • Principled Commitment (12 workshops): A relationship program for committed couples, that helps couples bring their principles and values explicitly to their relationships, by Melanie Davis, Stephanie Haymaker, Craig Hirschberg, and Rick Bellingham.

Programs Available Online by September 2008

  • Field test versions of curricula are published online. Any congregation is welcome to download and use the field test version of a Tapestry of Faith program. Selected congregations agree to offer feedback on its structure and activities as well as the user-friendliness of the online publication.

Children

  • Seeking Truth (Grade K-1): Wonderful Welcome (16 sessions): Children learn about intangible gifts such as love, friendship, protection, invitation and welcome. They discover ways they give and receive them in their own lives and become empowered to make their gifts seen, heard and felt. By Aisha Hauser and Susan Lawrence.
  • Seeking Truth (Grade 4-5): Windows and Mirrors (16 sessions): Through a lens of UU faith and justice, children look closely at themselves and the communities to which they belong, especially their congregation. How do they experience true affiliation with others who may, at first, seem very unlike themselves? What actions do their observations demand, as they move out from “me” to “we?” By Gabrielle Farrell, Natalie Fenimore and Jenice View.
  • Seeking Truth (Grade 6): Amazing Grace: Exploring Right and Wrong (16 sessions): The group engages in a variety of activities and reflections to learn about and experience moral decision-making. By Rick Kimball.

Children

  • Seeking Truth (Grade 2-3) Untitled (16 sessions): Interacting with stories from our Sources which illuminate our UU Principles strengthens children’s UU identity. From stories about contemporary Unitarian Universalists and stories from our faith heritage, children learn how UU faith helps us empathize with others and affirm the inherent worth and dignity of every person. By Alice Anacheka-Nasemann and Lynn Ungar.

Adult

  • Harvest the Power: A leadership program designed to develop spirituality, UU identity, and leadership skills in congregational leaders. By Matt Tittle and Gail Tittle.

  • Our Whole Lives: Sexuality Education for Young Adults (Ages 18-35): A new component of this lifespan curriculum series, by Michael Tino, Laura Stuart, and Sarah Gibb Millspaugh. (Published in print—order from UUA Bookstore.)

The Toolkit Series

  • Nurturing Children and Youth: A Developmental Guidebook: By Tracey L. Hurd. A tool for parents, teachers, and religious professionals, this book outlines typical progressions in cognitive, social, emotional, moral and spiritual development from infancy to early twenties.
  • Stories in Faith: Exploring Our UU Principles and Sources Through Wisdom Tales: by Gail Forsyth-Vail. Nineteen tales culled from different cultures and faith traditions illuminate our seven Principles and six Sources.
  • When Youth Lead: A Guide to Intergenerational Social Justice Ministry, Plus 101 Youth Projects: By Jill Schwendeman. Guidance for constructing and maintaining a spiritually vital youth ministry, including a wide range of social justice projects.

  • The Coming of Age Handbook: A resource with workshops on theology, spirituality, history, social justice, and other topics, along with suggested guidelines for designing a congregationally unique program, by Sarah Gibb Millspaugh.

Writing in 2008-2009

At least four children’s programs, two youth programs, and four adult programs are being written in 2008-2009 for field-test in 2009.
