Description of Activity
The terms functional and dysfunctional are prevalent in popular culture. Invite participants to think about those terms as they apply to family function. Ask them to list, with you or a volunteer in the role of scribe, what makes a family functional: a family that functions well? What makes a family work? Often the things that do not make a family work arise through such a discussion; those factors could be listed as well. If such factors do not enter the conversation, you may invite youth to consider the things that make it difficult for a family to function well or to be happy. Close the discussion by asking participants to brainstorm a list of the "top five" attributes of a functional, healthy family.This work is made possible by the generosity of individual donors.
