Part of the Parent Trilogy

Authors: Roberta and Christopher Nelson
Publisher: Unitarian Universalist Association
Pub. Date: 1990 (revision)
Available From: UUA Bookstore

Theme and Description
Helps parents and other adults articulate their religious experiences and beliefs in order to respond to the religious questions of their children.
Goals for Participants
  • To probe personal theological issues
  • To gain insight into their religious journeys
  • To explore ways to interact with children in their religious questioning
  • To reach a deeper understanding of what it is to be a Unitarian Universalist
  • To appreciate the important role of parents in their children's religious development
  • To articulate their personal theology.

Age Range
Adult

Size of Group
12 to 16

Space Requirements
A comfortable, private meeting room with enough space to allow the large group to divide into smaller groups

Number of Sessions
6

Length of Sessions
1 1/2 to 2 hours

Leader Training
Leaders must do background reading and have knowledge of and experience in group process

Leader Preparation
2 to 3 hours per session

Strengths
  • Facilitates theological explorations among adults
  • Enables parents to help children with their religious questioning.

Limitations

  • Does not encompass the full range of theological diversity that exists in our religious community (lacks sufficient affirmation for liberal Christians)
  • Lacks a comprehensive bibliography.

Adaptability

  • Too large a group hinders the effectiveness of the exchange among participants; if more than 16 people sign up, form two groups. This program works well in a weekend workshop format.

Unitarian Universalist Values
Affirms the inherent worth and dignity of every person; acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations; and the belief that the living tradition we share draws from many sources.
