Apply for Conferences and Events
Youth, we need your help. We are experiencing a drought here in Boston. A drought that could have devastating consequences. Yes, a drought that could jeopardize Young Religious Unitarian Universalists (YRUUs) ability to be a thriving youth organization. "What is this drought," you ask? It is the severe lack of applications we have been receiving for ALL youth leadership positions. Youth are you out there?!?!?! We need to see you! As MC5 once said, "Lemme see a sea of hands!" Or better yet, let me see a sea of applications! Please review the following leadership positions currently available in YRUU and apply for as many as you desire! Go, like the wind!Register for Conferences!
Continental Conference
August 9-15, 2004
Arrowbear, CA
A long celebrated historic Unitarian Universalist (UU) conference since the Liberal Religious Youth (LRY), once again Continental Conference (Con Con) will be occurring. This is your opportunity to get involved with continental events in a camp style community. There will be weeklong workshops, worships, a coffeehouse and prom, and a super secret activity. This is a time for UU youth to come together in community to celebrate faith and meet people from all over the continent. Like all continental events there will be an opportunity to take part in racial identity groups as YRUU continues to work to become an anti-racist organization.
YRUU Social Justice Conference
October 21-25,
2004
Chicago, IL
The Youth Social Justice Conference (YSJC) is an
amazing conference where youth come together and
network with one another from
all around the U.S. and Canada. This is an
opportunity to learn about different
issues of social justice being
worked on and how youth in YRUU can get involved.
One of the main
focuses is the Working Action Issue, which is Education Reform
and
Multiculturalism. The YSJC is filled with workshops and trainings that help
equip youth working for justice with the neccessary tools to be part of
the
movement to change the world and bring justice to the focus of our
communities.
Throughout the conference participants will have a chance
to attend racial
identity groups, worships, and meals with new and old
friends. There are slots
reserved for two social action coordinators
for each district/region as well as
two other folks from that
district/region. After the August 30 registration
deadline the spaces
will be opened up to all other youth involved in YRUU. For
registration
and more information check out the YRUU website.
Register
Like, to Vote? Yes,
Yes, Yes!
Within YRUU we have a crew of folks who are eighteen years of age or older and one of the things that means is that these folks are given the right to vote. As a faith organization it is important that we work to put our faith into action and part of that is to learn what is going on in the political sector and how one can get involved. Registering to vote brings up many issues for people. Some folks think that voting does not do anything and is of no worth. Other people feel that as long as they vote they do not have to follow up with the people they elect and they are done with their job after they cast their ballot. If we are to live our faith and participate in the democratic process it is important that we not ignore avenues that exist for making change but also understand the limitations of the avenues provided to us. As an organization YRUU encourages youth to register to vote when they can as well as take action in other ways (i.e. protest, write politicians, keep learning, etc.) Click here if you are interested in finding out how to register to vote or to find out how to register to vote in the U.S. and in Canada.
Want Some More?
YRUU provides and supports conferences and trainings for youth all throughout the year, the summer is always the busiest with Con Con, General Assembly, Youth Council, and now Sexually Accepting Teenage Unitarian Universalists Respecting Diversity Among Youth ( SATUURDAY), but the events happening all throughout the year are amazing and great opportunities for community building and struggle. YRUU also tries to have a presence at numerous major protests and rallies and often works to provide space for youth to come together in order to use their collective voice to speak up for justice. Some highlights to be looking for in the future are:
- School of the Americas protest in Columbus, GA
- Youth and Young Adults of Color and Youth and Young Adult anti-racist white allies conferences
- Youth of Color Leadership Development Conference
