YRUU Steering Committee Speaks
by Jazmin Sandoz-RosadoDear Readers of Synapse,
The Steering Committee would like to tell y'all what we've been up to this year. At our meetings we've chosen people for various positions such as the June and September Youth Program Specialists (YPSs), the Continental Conference (Con Con) Dean (Theme is: Faith in Action…it's going to be wicked good) and the Hardcore Unitarian Universalist (UU) Person Energized and Ready (HUUPER), who is like the General Assembly (GA) Youth Caucus dean. This year it is actually HUUPERs. Speaking of GA, the Steering Committee has also made a new YRUU t-shirt that we will begin selling at GA Long Beach (2004), which y'all should definitely go to if you're interested in business. Scholarships are available at the Young Religious Unitarian Universalist (YRUU) website. Throughout the year, we have also been working on the planning of Youth Council '04, by giving attention to each aspect of it.
We have also used consensus to decide to become affiliated with the group, Rolling Thunder Tour, which is a tour where people are encouraged to fight for their rights through some education and some awesome music.
A project that had been thought of before our Steering Committee and that we have taken on is the potential for a Common Ground III. To do that we've made a survey that will be available soon online at the YRUU website. Also, we have been keeping ties with organizations that we are affiliated with such as Diverse and Revolutionary Unitarian Universalist Multicultural Ministries (DRUUMM), Continental Unitarian Universalist Young Adult Network (C*UUYAN), the Unitarian Universalist Association Board of Trustees (UUA BOT), and the Journey Towards Wholeness Transformation Committee (JTWTC). As the Steering Committee's Anti Racism Training, we attended the Linked Identities Networking in Coalition (LINC) New Orleans, LA, Anti-Racism Leadership Development Conference (ARLDC) with our new June YPS and one of our HUUPERs.
In addition to our Sterring Committee (SC) roles, we have pursued other leadership roles outside and inside YRUU. That said, we would like to take this chance to encourage youth and youth allies to apply for leadership positions; they are effective and enlightening experiences. Some youth and youth allies may feel they don't have enough experience, well talk to leaders and get and hear their experience. There are positions that are the experience. Although leadership roles can be difficult much of the time, we've gained a unique experience and built a remarkable community.
