What the SWAT?
by Lydia Pelot-HobbsHey, do you care about where this world is headed? About injustices? About putting your faith into action? Then you should join the Young Religious Unitarian Universalist (YRUU) Super Working Action Team (SWAT)!!
You say,"What is SWAT exactly?" Well, SWAT is a group of anyone between the ages of fourteen and twenty who want to work on a specific social justice issue and support the Working Action Manager (WAM). Currently the issue, which was decided at General Assembly last June, is Education Reform and Multiculturalism. Within this issue we are tackling the issues of getting rid of standardized testing, supporting the unschooling movement, working towards conceptual learning, getting rid of tracking programs in schools, making the school system supportive of different cultures beyond the point of just putting some posters up in a room. AND, if there is anything else you want to be included, it can, because SWAT is a grassroots organization where YOU decide what is important.
Now that you're pumped for this awesome cause, you ask, "How do you get involved?" Simple. Try and go to the annual YRUU Social Justice Conference, research the issue from a list of books and articles and get an awesome present for a job well done. Have workshops though your youth group or district on Education Reform and Multiculturalism, educate your congeregation, go to General Assembly and help support the issue so it can be taken on as a larger issue of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA).
