Beacon Press Publishes First Books in "The King Legacy" Series

Beacon Press, a department of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), has published the first two titles in its new publishing program, "The King Legacy," made available through an exclusive agreement with the Estate of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Stride Toward Freedom:  The Montgomery Story had been unavailable for almost a decade.  King's unparalleled historical account of the first successful large-scale application of nonviolent resistance in America  is now 'must' reading for a new generation.

Where Do We Go from Here:  Chaos or Community? had been unavailable for more than a decade.  King's final book offers an astute analysis of American race relations and the movement after a decade of civil rights efforts.  Author and commentator Cornel West said of Where Do We Go from Here: "[Dr. King's] unique ability to connect the life of the mind to the struggle for freedom is legendary, and in this book—his last grand expression of his vision—he put forward his most prophetic challenge to powers that be and his most progressive program for the wretched of the earth."

Beacon holds the sole right to print new editions of previously published King titles and to compile Dr. King's writings, sermons, orations, lectures, and prayers into entirely new editions, including significant new introductions by leading scholars. This partnership brings together the legacy of one of the most important civil rights and social justice leaders in the world with one of the oldest and most respected independent publishing houses in America.

Dexter Scott King, representing the Estate of Martin Luther King, Jr. Inc, said at the time of this historic publishing announcement, “Beacon Press will be a dedicated public outlet for [my faither's] work, and will help bring his urgently needed teachings of nonviolence and human dignity, and his dream of freedom and equality to a new global audience.”

Helene Atwan, Director of Beacon Press, said when the publishing agreement was announced: “We feel enormously privileged to be the new publishers of Dr. King's work. His vision and his message are more essential than ever in a world where, despite great gains, the global aspects of the radical inequities Dr. King devoted his life to exposing and addressing are all too apparent. He has much to teach us, perhaps as much today as in his own lifetime.”
