Letter to Connecticut Unitarian Universalist Congregations Re: Legalization of Connecticut Civil Unions

April 21, 2005

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the Unitarian Universalist Association and our member congregations across the country, please accept my warmest congratulations on the legal recognition of civil unions in your state. We applaud the legislators and governor of Connecticut for their historic decision to acknowledge and protect the commitments of same-sex couples. This move toward justice is a shining example of elected officials using the democratic process to ensure fairness for all of their constituents.

We thank our congregations throughout the state for their work to advance justice for all people. We greatly appreciate everyone who has worked and will continue to work toward full Marriage Equality in Connecticut. Civil Unions represent an important first step that promises a brighter future for us all.

Today I share a special rejoicing with the many same-sex couples in Connecticut as I prepare for my own upcoming wedding. Please know that our private celebration will be enriched by your public victory. I honor your enduring, loving relationships and I wish you many long years of happiness and security in your lives.

In Faith,

William G. Sinkford
President, Unitarian Universalist Association
