Utah Pride Center Receives Over $29,000 in Donations from Unitarian Universalists
At the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) General Assembly 2009, held June 24-28th in Salt Lake City, Unitarian Universalists donated $29,925.79 to the Utah Pride Center. The Utah Pride Center provides support for LGBT youth, adults, and families through a variety of programs. With the money raised from Unitarian Universalists at General Assembly, the Utah Pride Center will expand their services for LGBT youth.
“We are so very grateful for the Unitarian Universalists’ outpouring of love and support for our work here in Utah on behalf of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth,” said Valerie Larabee, executive director of the Utah Pride Center. “These youth are marginalized, disenfranchised and at risk. The generosity of the UUA will strengthen our efforts to preserve Utah families and create safe and affirming environments for LGBT youth as they journey into adulthood.”
The Utah Pride Center will use the donation to increase their statewide outreach and cultural competency training for workers in youth-centered environments and to open their LGBT youth drop-in center for 5 days each week. The Tolerant Intelligent Network of Teens (TINT) center, previously open for only 4 days each week, is a safe and affirming space where youth can receive social support while accessing food and other resources.
General Assembly is the annual meeting of the UUA. Other highlights of General Assembly 2009 were the election of the new UUA president, Rev. Peter Morales; the interfaith public witness event in support of immigrant families; and “A Prom for All,” a welcoming dance for the LGBT community hosted by the UUA.
The UUA is a faith community of more than 1,000 self-governing congregations that bring to the world a vision of religious freedom, tolerance and social justice. The UUA has supported civil rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people for several decades. The denomination voted in 1996 to advocate for full legal marriage equality for same-sex couples.
