United Nations Sunday: Engaging in Global Social Justice
Date: Passed: Saturday, October 27, 2018, 8:00 pm EDT
At the Sunday morning worship services, the minister gave a brief description of the UU-UNO and a collection was taken for the office. The "United Nations Sunday" event was announced from the pulpit. That took place in the afternoon, in the Buchan room at our church from 1:00 to 3:00, with about 50 people in attendance. It was billed as "United Nations Sunday: Engaging in Global Social Justice." The program consisted of:
- Welcome
- "Land Acknowledgement"
- Introduction of speaker
- Address by Yashar Vasef, immediate past president of the Portland chapter of the United Nations Association, on the topic "The work of the United Nations and how we can act locally in support of the UN"
- Introduction of panelists and tablers
- Short panel presentations on the following topics:
- the Imani Project in Kenya
- the work of Mercy Corps in devastated areas
- Middle East issues and the work of UUJME (Unitarian Universalists for Justice in the Middle East)
- immigration issues and how UUs are involved
After a short Q & A, the audience was invited to have refreshments and visit the tables that had been set up around the room. Eighteen social justice organizations from our church and from the community had tables. Each group that was represented was asked to present one specific action that people could take. For example, at the Peace Action Table, we had letters for people to sign to our senators, urging them to co-sponsor and support S.3169 to extend the New START nuclear disarmament treaty. We also had a letter to Sen. Merkley, thanking him for his stand on immigration issues. Our U.N. Sunday was a more extensive event than in previous years because it was a collaborative effort as part of the newly-formed "Global Social Justice Coalition" at our church.
