UUA Offers New Immigration Curriculum for Children's Religious Education

The UUA's Ministries and Faith Development Staff Group has announced publication of a new curriculum titled "With Justice and Compassion: Immigration Sessions for Children’s Religious Education," by Mandy Neff. This curriculum invites children in grades 1-3 and children in grades 4-6 to explore their own family stories while learning about immigration in the United States. It lifts up justice and compassion as guiding values as we consider immigration justice issues in our own time.

Annual Program Fund Contribution Remains the Same

Community Minister Helps 'One Child at a Time'

The Rev. Donald E. Robinson had already had a long career helping disadvantaged children in Washington, D.C., when he took on one more gargantuan task. In 1991, after more than 30 years of working with Washington youth in juvenile halls and community programs, Robinson founded Beacon House in the Edgewood Terrace neighborhood of Northeast Washington. Over the years Beacon House was adopted by around 15 area UU congregations.

Phoenix UUs Protest Conservative Policy Conference

Wal-Mart Confirms Expansion of Non-Discrimination Policy

In each of the past five years, the Unitarian Universalist Association has filed a shareholder resolution asking Wal-Mart to add Gender Identity or Expression to its non-discrimination policy. Tar Sands Action Inspired by UU's Civil Disobedience

Iowa UU Named Rural "Champion of Change"

In the middle of Iowa, where biological diversity can consist of fields of corn next to fields of soybeans, Linda Barnes wanted more. To make that happen, Barnes, a Unitarian Universalist, started a two-year degree program in Entrepreneurial and Diversified Agriculture. The program, now in its eighth year, caught the attention of the Obama Administration, and in July she was summoned to the White House, where she was recognized as a "Champion of Change" for rural America.

Love Marches in Georgia Against Anti-Immigrant Legislation

On July 1, Georgia’s new state immigration law went into effect, following a federal court judge’s decision to enjoin a couple of the provisions, but allowing for most of them, similar to the law passed in Arizona last year. In response, Unitarian Universalists took part in a protest march and rally beginning at the state capitol on Saturday, July 2. Many wore yellow Standing on the Side of Love t-shirts, and the crowd was estimated at 10,000 to 15,000 people.

Shareholder Resolution Advances LGBT Rights

In its continuing effort to persuade corporations to adopt policies protecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) employees from discrimination, the UUA has assisted in a shareholder resolution urging a major defense contractor to protect its workers from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity or expression. At the annual shareholder meeting of KBR Inc. in Houston on May 19, 61.6 percent of shareholders voted in favor of the resolution.

Fire Devastates Maine Church

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Brunswick, Maine, suffered heavy damage in a fire that started in the early morning hours of Monday, June 6. Eco-Village Rises in Haiti’s Central Plateau

Recovery from last year’s devastating earthquake in Haiti has been painfully slow for the tens of thousands of Haitians who still sleep in tent cities in the capital of Port-au-Prince. But on a joint service trip of the Unitarian Universalist Association and the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee in late May, there were signs of hope and action. Along with 10 UU seminary students, leaders of the UUA and UUSC travelled to Haiti’s Central Plateau to participate in a hands-on eco-village building project that will help 40 Haitian families rebuild their homes and their lives.

UUA-UUSC Japan Fund Supports Religious Partners After Quake

The March 11 earthquake and tsunami that devastated the northeast coast of Japan killed more than 12,000 people. Rev. Eric Cherry, director of the UUA's International Resources office, was in Japan recently to meet with the partner groups. He said many members of these groups were directly affected by the disasters. “The Rissho Kosei-kai itself has 35 to 40 congregations that have been damaged terribly." As of April 8, Unitarian Universalists had donated $200,000 to Japanese relief efforts. Decisions about how to use these funds will be made in cooperation with our partners, Cherry said.
