The Rev. Peter Morales, president of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), issued the following statement applauding the legalization of same-sex marriage in Delaware:
“Yesterday, the governor of Delaware signed the marriage equality bill that made Delaware the 11th state to ensure equal rights for its citizens. I applaud the great efforts of all who helped secure this victory.
Unitarian Universalists have played significant roles in support of marriage equality in each of these states. I thank them for their dedicated commitment to our Unitarian Universalist principle affirming the worth and dignity of every person.
It has been almost ten years since the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled in favor of marriage equality. I am heartened to see other states taking action to afford this important civil right to their own citizens.
As we await the rulings from the U.S. Supreme Court on DOMA and California’s Prop 8, I remain optimistic that very soon marriage equality will be recognized by the federal government and every state. Until that day, Unitarian Universalists will continue to stand on the side of love in this struggle for equality.”
